Automotive Technology – Active and Passive Safety Systems

A driver is desperately trying to make a business appointment and fiddles with the phone to call ahead that she is running late. Another flips through a portfolio of CDs trying to find just the right music selection. Both overestimate their abilities and swerve momentarily into the next lane.

In today’s busy world, people often find themselves multi-tasking; and unfortunately, drivers are taking this trend to the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), not only do the majority of Americans view driving as a routine task (i.e., not worthy of special attention), 50% of all crashes involve driver “inattention.”

Safercar.gov agrees. It says 90% of vehicles in “fatal, single-vehicle rollovers involved routine driving maneuvers” and 85% of “rollover-related fatalities are single-vehicle crashes.” Based on these statistics, driver behavior seems to play a crucial role in fatal rollover crashes.

At the same time that drivers are being implored to practice safe and attentive driving, automotive engineers are also eager to create new technologies to help increase roadway safety. Isn’t there some fancy device that could warn a driver when he drifts into the next lane? React when another vehicle is in his blind spot? Apply the brakes before a crash?

Pre-crash mitigation systems attempt to combat some of the common causes of automobile accidents through warnings and automatic adjustments. Such systems are the focus of research initiatives into roadway safety and include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and side alert systems.

In a forward collision warning system, the vehicle’s system literally senses the distance between it and the vehicle or object ahead of it in the lane. Predicting the possibility of an accident by sensing the distance between slower moving and stopped vehicles ahead, it warns the driver when appropriate. If a crash occurs, the system initializes precautionary measures – such as pretensioning motorized safety belts and applying brakes. Indeed, active braking in the seconds before a collision can play a major role in crash energy reduction.

According to NHTSA, some 200,000 accidents every year are due to lane changes. To help reduce the number of these accidents, lane departure warning systems have been designed. They caution drivers when their vehicles leave their intended lanes. Using a monocular camera mounted behind the windshield, the lane departure warning system’s software programs estimate lane width and road curvature, determine the vehicle’s heading and lateral position and initialize a tactile, visual or audible alert to its driver when he or she crosses a line.

It’s not difficult to guess, then, what side alert systems do. Using infrared sensing and other technologies, such systems help drivers become aware of vehicles in side blind spots. In some models, these sensors are integrated into mirrors, taillights and side fascia. The side blind spot region is scanned for temperature changes to detect a vehicle, a visual indication can be given in mirrors, and, when necessary, an audible alert can be issued. The technology is so advanced, sensors ignore stationary roadside objects and are immune to noise.

Once an automotive engineer has cameras, IR sensors and radars on a car, there is an opportunity to imagine and develop many more products. And, as automotive engineers perfect these systems, they are likely to become more widely available to consumers.

The USB Memory Stick Revolution

USB Flash Drives vs Disc Media

Over the last 5 years Flash drives have become so popular that they are being mass produced in vast numbers. This, of course, brings the price right down on each unit making them an even more attractive proposition for those looking to distribute large amounts of data to a large number of people. They have a number of advantages over high capacity disc media such as Blu-ray DVD discs, the most obvious one being their size. The actual circuit board holding the memory chip inside a USB drive is very small. The casing is simply designed to accommodate the interface and to make the device easier to handle and less easy to lose, but they are still smaller and more easily transported than a Blu-ray DVD in a case. They can be fixed to keyrings or stored in a small slot in a briefcase where they take up little room.

Their next advantage is their data capacity. These amazing little devices can hold an incredible amount of data with USB memory sticks readily available that can hold as much as 512GB of data. In comparison, a standard dual layer Blu-ray DVD disc can only hold a maximum of 50GB. There is also the advantage of data transfer speed with the latest USB 3.1 standard realistically capable of uploading or receiving data at a rate of 500 MB/second meaning that a 512 GB USB memory stick can be filled to capacity in around 17 minutes.

The versatility of the device interface is also a major plus. The smaller micro-B plug USB interface can be used allowing the flash drive to be connected to a phone or tablet. With phones and tablet data storage capacities increasing rapidly with advancing technology, coupled with the fact that more and more consumers are using these devices due to their convenient size rather than a laptop or desktop PC, the micro-B plug USB interface is fast becoming the most popular type selected when consumers order large numbers of USB drives.

How Can USB Flash Drives Benefit Your Business

If you have attended any sort of industry tradeshow or exhibition over the last few years, you will undoubtedly have come across businesses who distribute promotional company information using flash drives. Their large capacity makes them ideal for distributing high definition movie files of product demonstrations, detailed 3D CAD models, many hundreds of large high definition images or sophisticated animated product brochures.

If an event is to be attended by many thousands of visitors all of whom are potential customers, then it will be well worth your while to investigate the costs of storing promotional data on a flash drive to hand out as a free giveaway. Not only is the flash drive useful for getting your company message across to the user, they are also useful gadgets to have on hand for the end user. Often, the full capacity of the device is not used and the promotional data is stored in a partition. The rest of the capacity forms an empty partition which can be used by the recipient. This ensures that the company who originally handed out the device is always kept in mind as the drives can be printed with company logos and contact information which is visible whenever the device is used.

Memory sticks are also available in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Business card type USB sticks are great for communicating company contact information without the user even needing to plug the flash drive into a reading device. The body of the USB stick can be pretty much any shape you desire and custom logo mouldings are cost effective when purchased in bulk. They can also incorporate other useful devices such as pens, torches or bottle openers.

Printing On a USB Memory Stick

Printing onto a memory stick is done using a screen printing technique whereby up to 4 spot colours can be printed onto the device and a fifth colour included which is the body colour of the device itself. Screen printing is a technique that uses fine meshes, one for each colour in the design, through which UV sensitive ink is forced onto the surface of the memory stick in the printable region. As each colour is transferred onto the device a UV light is used to cure the ink before the next colour is applied. The curing process is very fast, taking only a few seconds per colour. The printing process itself is very quick, meaning that it is possible to print many hundreds or even thousands of memory sticks in a very short time. The process is usually automated with the flash drives being loaded and unloaded into jigs which hold them securely for printing, by automated robot arms.

The screen printed, UV cured ink design is very hard wearing and needs to be, as USB memory sticks tend to be handled a lot and may incur many knocks and scrapes during their life as many are transported in pockets or on keyrings with other metal objects.

Mass USB Flash Drive Duplication

Transferring data onto multiple flash drives is usually carried out using a duplication unit that has a large number of individual USB ports where the drives can be plugged in. Units with 60 ports are not uncommon and where a media duplication company offers a USB duplication service, they often have many such units linked together so that data can be transferred to many hundreds of drives simultaneously.

The duplication unit has a master port or hard drive where the master data is loaded initially. The USB drives are then loaded into each port and if the job requires hundreds or thousands of drives then other duplication units can be connected daisy chain style, all reading from the same master drive. Once the data has been transferred to the first batch of drives, they are usually removed by hand and then replaced with fresh, blank drives and so the process continues. Sometimes this loading and unloading process is automated but it is complicated to set up and only where a company regularly supplies USB duplication jobs running into the tens of thousands or more, will such a system exist.

As previously mentioned, the more USB drives that are ordered, the cheaper the unit cost becomes and because very large amounts of data can be transferred to the devices very quickly, they are set to overtake discs as the media of choice when companies need to transfer large data files to potential customers, existing customers or to staff working within the company.

Summary

If you’re considering a data distribution project using discs to store the data, it may be well worth your time to cost the project using USB memory sticks as the storage media instead. Given the advantages listed above that flash drives have over disc media, your end users may well be much more appreciative.

Why Do You Choose The Micro RC Drone?

Compared with the big size RC drone, the obvious advantage of the ultra micro drone is that it can be flown just about anywhere. In other words, the micro ones support outdoor and indoor flight. This is the most important reason why we choose the micro RC drone. However, it also has a weak point that it does not support long time flight. In this article, I will show you a new product. It is called Eachine E010 Mini. And this article involves four aspects, including appearance designs and shows, function, remote control and battery.

Appearance Designs and Shows

It is one kind of micro RC drone with a dimension of 9.5*9.5*5cm. Depending on the small size, it can be played indoor. Besides, the cylindrical rotor housings add significant durability and produce less noise. Four carefully tuned electric fans give the RC drone smooth performance that produces far less noise compared to normal quads that use propellers for thrust. With LED night lights, it helps keep you going in the right direction. Most importantly, outstanding self-leveling makes it staying in control easily, even if it is your first flight.

Function

Normally, it supports the flight skills of ascending, descending, forward, backward, left sideward flying, right sideward flying and 360 degrees rolling. With the headless mode, anyone can fly with little effort.

Moreover, it supports one-key returning. With built-in positioning system, it can automatically locate the remote control. Just need to press the one-key return button, it will fly back to the remote control’ s location.

Remote Control

It adopts 2.4GHz remote control technology. Compared with the low-frequency 2.7MHz wavelength, the 2.4GHz one takes the advantages of further control distance and more sensitive response.

Battery

The 3.7V 150mAh flight battery, included, can provide up to 5-minutes of flight and can be conveniently recharged with the included USB charger. It needs about 30 minutes charging time. For almost people, the flight time is short. As a result, I recommend for preparing spare batteries to prolong the flight time.

Summary

To sum up, Eachine E010 Mini is a pretty good ultra micro drone. It features innovative appearance, one-key returning and precise positioning. Besides, the micro size allows flying indoor. This is the unique feature because the big size RC drone couldn’t complete flying in the small room.

Car Dealerships Must Convince a Customer to Return

There are about 17,500 car dealerships in the United States. Each year they prosper, survive, struggle, or close. Meanwhile, some dealerships are relentlessly successful year after year, often expanding despite the vagaries of the economy, world situation, and other factors.

What elevates some car dealerships above the rest?

Among the premier automobile dealers in the U.S. is Rick Hendrick, 65, of Charlotte, N.C., who launched his first dealership at the age of 23. Though probably better known now for his championship NASCAR teams than the millions of cars he’s sold, Hendrick says he applies to racing a few principles he discovered while building 95 Hendrick Automotive Group dealerships from the Carolinas to California.

“Before customer satisfaction, you’ve got to have employee satisfaction,” he says. “If your people don’t think you care about them, they ain’t going to care about you. That’s the motto I live by.”

Virtually every auto dealer agrees that the key to success is customer service, and that the roots of it are in a dealership’s employees. Passionate, knowledgeable workers may not be easy to find, but they’re well worth the pursuit. Research also shows that customer-focused companies are constantly motivating and rewarding those employees devoted to exceptional service.

Colin Shaw is the founder of Beyond Philosophy, a company that helps businesses foster enduring relationships with customers. American Express, FedEx, and IBM are among the many companies he has advised, and Shaw tells them all that management is not the messenger for the “customer experience” he’s designed.

“Your team delivers the ‘customer experience,'” Shaw says. “Making sure your employees believe in your brand promise, are trained properly on how to deliver it, and are invested in its success enough to do what it takes to achieve it are crucial to having a customer experience that surprises and delights customers.”

According to Automotive Training Centers (AATC), the knowledge and enthusiasm of such employees creates a constant flow of opportunities for a car dealership to separate itself from competitors. As an example, each car sold to a new customer will require regular maintenance. The moment one of those cars returns for an oil change, another opportunity to provide exceptional “after sale” service arrives with it.

When the anticipation and appreciation of such opportunities are imbedded in a dealership’s sales, service, parts, and repair departments, its dealer-wide face of exceptional service generates customer trust and loyalty in the years to come.

So too does the involvement of car dealerships in local community charities, non-profit fund-raisers, marathon walks, sponsorships, and donations. While most car dealerships are anxious to give back to their communities, they also realize it enhances relationships with current customers and creates new ones.

Reflecting upon 42 years of success in selling automobiles – and an empire of nearly 100 car dealerships – Rick Hendrick has a pretty good idea of its influence on his 30 years of championship auto racing.

He says he knows at least something about all the facets of racing, but isn’t “good at anything.”

“If there’s anything I work on the hardest,” he adds, “it is to keep all the people pointed in the right direction. Keep them motivated.”

5 Tips For Locating A Reliable Auto Repair Shop

As it so often did with everyday issues, the popular sitcom Seinfeld had something seriocomic to say about the relationship between auto mechanics and their customers. In episode 107 (“The Fusilli Jerry”), when Jerry worries that an unscrupulous mechanic is taking advantage of him, his neurotic friend George responds, “That’s what they do. They can make up anything!”

Although this is greatly exaggerated, George expresses a common concern of car owners who don’t know much about the vehicles they drive and therefore have no idea whether or not they are being charged a fair price for repairs. The answer to this problem isn’t to take a crash course in automotive repair, but rather to learn how to find a good auto repair shop wherever you might be. With that in mind, here are a few simple and reliable tips for doing just that.

1. Plan Ahead

The single most common error car owners make is that they wait for something to go wrong with their vehicle before they start searching for an auto repair shop. In this instance, even a small problem could become a major emergency, as worried drivers will do just about anything to get their vehicles back on the road–including paying more than they should for repairs. But if you already have access to a reliable mechanic, you won’t have to panic!

2. Ask Around

Ever wonder why you don’t see many commercials for auto repair shops? The reason is simple: when they do good work, word gets around and customers come calling. Therefore, the best way to find a trustworthy shop is to simply ask around. Since almost everyone needs a mechanic at some point, your friends, co-workers and family members are sure to have their fair share of recommendations.

3. Consult Consumer Organizations

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) provides a fairly accurate gauge of a company’s reputation, including the number and nature of complaints against them. You can also check with your local chamber of commerce and with consumer-review sites like Yelp.

4. Visit the Shop

Even if you don’t know much about cars, a stop at a prospective auto repair shop should give you a glimpse into how they run their business. Is it a well-organized facility? Is the staff courteous and professional? Do they have experience with vehicles like yours? Do they have posted labor rates? These are just a few of the questions you will want to consider during your visit.

5. Try Them Out

As mentioned at the outset, you never want to wait until something goes wrong before you start searching for an auto repair shop. Since there are always minor jobs that can be performed on your vehicle at almost any time, it’s a good idea to test a prospective shop with a small task. For example, you might ask them to change your oil or rotate your tires. If they can handle these simple jobs promptly and professionally, you may have found the right fit.

Car Lifetime Extension

When I met my husband for the first time, it was a love-at-first-sight for us. He was smart, sweet, intelligent, and most importantly an engineer. Well, hardly did I recognize how the engineering stuff slowly creeps into your everyday life. Just one day before our marriage, he came to me and expressed his wish to buy a little notebook for our vehicle. Quite shockingly, I screamed “why?” Just the night before our wedding, and I was expecting a surprise from him.

Though this was no less than a bombshell, I expected a more pleasant one. To my great disappointment, my husband exclaimed that we need a notebook for keeping a track of everything related to our automobile – from car mileage and body dents to oil replacement and windshield repair. As a matter of fact, his reply was nothing different from any other engineer or car fanatic. Well, you’re possibly thinking “how crazy!” and if you’re doing so, there’s nothing abnormal about it. However, since I was in love with him, I instantly agreed to go for it. Yes, I’m still in love with him, but today I’m in a state where I don’t allow engineering ideas to intervene in my personal life. Yet again, I agree with my husband that vehicle maintenance and checkups are a must for extending the life of your automobile. Here, in this article, we’ll discuss about vehicle upkeep services and why they’re so important for us to think about.

Your vehicle is a feat of modern engineering; however, it still calls for your help to stay fit and roadworthy over the years. Whether you own a brand new automobile or an old model, you must go for regular maintenance and avoid major automotive setbacks on the road. Some of the most common things involved in auto servicing are:

Oil replacement

Oil is the most important thing for every automobile; therefore, it only makes sense to change your engine oil at fixed time intervals. In fact, this is the most important maintenance need for your van, truck, car or SUV. As time passes by, the oil in your car becomes old and dirty. This, in turn, affects the efficiency and performance of your car. The frequency of this service depends on two factors – the brand of oil you use and the way you handle your car. As a general rule of the thumb, your car needs oil replacement every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Tyre balancing or rotation

Your tyres play an extremely important role in guaranteeing quality performance of your automobile. Besides improving your driving experience, it makes your vehicle more fuel-efficient. When you go to a dealership for tyre check ups, the auto mechanic or technician rotates the front tyres to the back and even adds weight to the tyres to create smooth tread wear.

Brake pad change

Quite often, car drivers hear a high-pitched screeching noise when they apply the brakes. Besides, you may also feel the steering wheel vibrate and shutter when applying brakes. These are clear indications of worn out brake pads. Driving with damaged brakes is dangerous; so, make sure that you take your car to a dealership or repair centre as soon as you notice these signals.

Car Lead Sites

Are you a car dealer troubled with poor sales for the past few months? Revenues are less and overhead and staff expenses are more. In such a scenario, what is the possible solution? Without customers and sales, it’s impossible to survive in the competitive automotive industry. This is the reason dealers are required to look for car lead sites that help vehicle sellers generate leads or prospects. This takes some amount of time and money.

As an automobile dealer, it’s natural to feel skeptical about these sites. You might ask that there are several of these and which of them to trust. Well, all your worries end here as this article will discuss the specialties of lead generating websites.

Before delving deeper into this discussion, let’s understand what do you mean by leads? Well, leads are those potential buyers who are sure to invest in a car from your dealership. These buyers are regarded as possible sales opportunities. When it comes to these sites, they keep track of potential car buyers and follow-up so that new sales opportunities are created. Now, what are the sources of an auto lead generation? To be honest, most of the prospects come from sources like online advertisements, lead generation websites, trade shows, and campaigns on social media platforms.

Companies that are behind these websites have experienced professionals who contact the right buyers and nurture them. This is done to help dealers meet their monthly sales targets. Dealers like you contact these companies to produce leads of the best quality. These sites and the professionals associated with it make use of several online strategies to grab the attention of possible car buyers towards the promos of your dealership.

These websites not only have the expertise to generate quality leads but also monitor and manage them in real-time. The most crucial responsibility is identifying the good prospects from the bad ones. The bad quality leads are segregated from the supreme ones which are finally sent to the dealers. Now, the question arises how the identification of good and bad leads is done. Poor quality ones are those prospects or buyers who have not expressed further interest in purchasing a car. These car buyers either provide fake personal information or they do not reply to phone calls or emails.

As far as car lead sites are concerned, they will help you connect with the best possible buyers. So, generation of car leads is only a part of the total business process. Now, in order to convert these leads into customers, your dealership’s marketing team should take the onus in following-up the prospective customers to generate sales.

Once the leads are sent to a dealer, attractive offers and discounted deals are ways to improve chances of sales. It is the responsibility of the marketing department to convert a prospect into a well-paying and guaranteed customer. This is possible with out of the box marketing tactics and special discounts.

To infer, it can be said that you should opt for a lead generating site that has a robust web presence.

What are your thoughts? Please comment.

Ultima Evolution Supercar: Hideous Looks But Incredibly Fast

In the middle of the car addicts there is a common expression used to reveal the passion for automobiles, that reads something like “the difference between adults and children is the size of their toys.” This is specifically right when you get acquainted with the vehicles like the Ultima Evolution supercar.

This Ultima Evolution supercar is part of a markedly promoted niche market in England, so-called “Kit Cars”, which are in essence cars that you are able to ride in your garage if you have the perfect equipment and if you follow the instructions consciously. Obviously, if you are not able to manage much or simply are not interested in riding, you can buy the cars already amassed.

It’s like those ductile designing kits or even LEGO, with the distinction that, if you ever rode a cart or a ship before, you have the chance to drive in the carport of his house a car that is probably as speedy as a Bugatti Veyron – but paying a much lower cost.

Various brands like Caterham, Ariel and several others are specifically famous in this area of cars kits, are selling their own cars as the reduplication of well-known models. This Ultima Evolution supercar is the part of the first group, but it concluded with taking the big idea of mount able cars to a whole new level.

The Fast and Furious Ultima Evolution Supercar

Most of the cars kit follow a basic procedure: all the parts are made of fiber, or glass (not much heavier and cheaper) or carbon (tough and of high price) and seated on a tubular frame. These parts are made up in a standard style so that the mounting is done in the basic feasible way – and Ultima Evolution supercar is likely to stress that the car is fully legal to walk on the streets.

The one with the artistic taste may fall short of a car kit and constancy for the safety will be, at best, debatable.

Obviously, this means that the aesthetics can leave something to be demanded for – it is very tough to get a car kit really aesthetic – the finish could not be the best and the reliability regarding the safety will be, at best, undefined. The explanation for this is that the main target of the companies that enhance this type of car is, most often, to create and unblemished mechanics.

The Ultima Evolution supercar pretty much resembles the old model, the GTR720, and that clears one thing: it still “aesthetically distinctive.” It added to itself new parts of light, forged alloy wheels, carbon fiber seats, wireless buttons and a bettered chassis. Unlike other type vehicles, which are generally known to be quite spartan, it also has GPS, rear camera, parking sensors and even sound system.

Evolution weighs about 950 kg and is from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.3 seconds absurd.

The most amazing part, however, is that the not to good looking duckling of the automotive world of high performance comes with an LS family of V8 Chevrolet, equipped with the power of producing up to 1,020 horsepower in supercharger version – Ultima Evolution supercar goes for 15 choices in total, starting in 350 horses in the primitive version.

All this army is capable of moving the faintest set – Evolution weighing about 950 kg – from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.3 seconds absurd! Top speed is estimated at approximately 390 km / h – and this is “only” 25 km / slower h than the new authorized transcription, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which recorded 415 km / h.

Now as we know, that, the British car kit is not so complex in different ways: the interior has only the much needed things, the exchange is manual six non-consecutive gears, traction is only back and there are the several electronic assistance of retrospectives out there that have similar figured – which may be thought about as bit chancy for a car of more than 1,000 hp.

So, do you think that the Ultima Evolution supercar can battle with the much more preferred and promoted models out there? Would you even think of speeding up in this typically designed car massed at home?

Difficulty Of Making Automotive Injection Molds

Injection molding is a commonly used plastic parts fabrication manufacturing process. There are so many products that are manufactured using this method and they vary in complexity, size and application. Automotive parts are some of the products that use this manufacturing process. Injection molds are achieved using injection molding machines, mold and raw plastic material. In the process the plastic is first melted in the molding machine before it is then injected into a mold where it is allowed to cool and solidify into the desired final part.

Injection molding produced thin walled plastic for various applications. The most popular product that is got from the process is plastic housing that is required for automotive dashboards, power tools, and household appliance and even for consumer electronics. Apart from largely being used in the automotive industry, the injection molds are used for other applications including making medical devices like syringes and valves. Automotive injection molds, however still take up a large percent in this method. Perfect as it might be, it is a method that also faces a number of challenges making it difficult to achieve accurate automotive injection molds. Below are some of the challenges and defects that make the process difficult.

Flash – This is occurrence of molten material when it seeps out of mold cavity and then solidifies. It means that after ejection of the part, there is the presence of a thin layer of material attached along the parting line of the part interfering with the final quality of the product. It is a problem that usually comes from a clamp force that is too low or injection pressure that is too high.

Warping – It is when the part goes though permanent bending when some sections end up shrinking much faster than others. This occurs as a result of cooling rate that is not uniform and is a very common challenge for the mold manufacturers.

Sink marks – The other difficulty that is faced when molding is the occurrence of sink marks. They are marks that result of shrinking of molten material that ends up filling voids that could be present on part sections that solidify first when the material gets injected into the mold. Usually, the sink marks occur when the injection pressure is too low or when the cooling rate is not uniform.

Bubbles – Bubbling also affects the possibilities of achieving the desired final automotive parts. The final product affected by this problem has bubbles on the surface affecting the look, feel and even the quality of the mold. It happens when the material used has too much moisture or when the injection temperatures are too high.

Unfilled sections – This is another problem that is commonly faced with automotive injection molds. It simply means that the final product will have sections that are not correctly and thoroughly filled because of the material flow rate that was too low or shot volume that was not sufficient enough during the process.

Ejector marks – When the ejection force is too high or when the cooling time is too short, then it is very possible for the injection mold to have ejector marks on it.

China injection molding requires attention and accuracy for the sake of achieving the highest quality of the molds needed. The best injection mold maker China should not only have the right tools and equipment but should get it right with the materials and tiny important details of the process.
